Good House Cleaning Tips

Keeping your house clean has several benefits aside from the obvious aesthetic one. A clean home is much healthier than a dirty home. A clean home also makes it much easier to find what you need. The old adage about everything having a place becomes an essential truth of life the very moment you realize you can't find what you've lost.

Crayon Marks
Resilient flooring and young kids inevitably mean crayon marks on the floor. Remove crayon marks from vinyl flooring by first rubbing with toothpaste and then washing with a damp rag. Silver polish is better for crayon marks that have been left on the floor for a long time.

Painted Surfaces
Your home is filled with painted surfaces that will eventually need a good cleaning, from walls to furniture. Before you put soap and water to any painted surface, it is a good idea to brush the dust and dirt away. Reach high places by covering the brushes of a broom with a cloth.

Staircase Banisters
Clean staircase banisters by wrapping a towel around a dry mop. Starting from the top of the stairs, work your way down the banisters by sliding the mop down it. Give the railing a fine misting with water and then make your way down again with a dry towel. When the cloth around the dry mop gets too dirty, just turned it inside out rather than finding a new towel.

Dusting Hard Surfaces
Dusting hard surfaces has a certain level of uselessness to it since the dust is only going to come back, but you can make your next attempt more successful than your last. Spraying furniture polish onto a rag will result in more efficient collection of dust particles than using a dry cloth.

Video Game Consoles
Always unplug your video game console before you clean it. The exterior of these devices can be cleaned with a dry, lint-free cloth. Never use any abrasive material or aerosol cleaners to clean video game consoles, not even the air vents. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush to gently clean away accumulations of dust in those vents.

Stains on Leather or Suede
Stains on furniture made of leather or suede can very often be quite literally erased with a pencil eraser. Oily stains should be cleaned with a sprinkling of cornstarch that has been left to absorb overnight. The next day you should be able to brush the leather or suede back to normal.

Glass Surfaces
Keeping the glass surfaces inside your house clean by adding 2 tbsp. of liquid fabric softener to 1 quart of lukewarm water. For added convenience, pour this mixture into a standard spray bottle. To get best results, clean with newspaper rather than a rag and then dry with a cloth.

Chrome
Don't waste money on those expensive chrome cleansers sold at the stores. Any chrome inside your house, including that on the car in the garage, can be cleaned just as well by with good old-fashioned club soda.
